This presentation will discuss the legal situation in Germany in light of anthropological and psychodynamic aspects and compare it with the situation in Canada. It will examine the relationship between people who wish to end their lives and their potential helpers. Conclusions will be drawn for psychotherapeutic practice.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this presentation participants will be able to:
- engage in an in-depth examination of the complex ethical, clinical, and relational issues surrounding Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) and their implications for psychotherapeutic practice.
- explore the personal and professional consequences of assisted dying, examining its impact not only on the therapeutic relationship and the healthcare professionals involved, but also on the external circle of patient’s family and broader professional and social networks.
- deepen participants’ understanding of the anthropological, psychodynamic, and psychotherapeutic dimensions of the MAiD process by offering a comparative perspective on the German legal approach to MAiD.
- drawing on one of the presenter’s own therapeutic cases involving a patient seeking MAiD, discuss the clinical dilemmas, ethical challenges, and psychotherapeutic insights that emerged throughout the therapeutic process.

Martin Teising, Prof., MD, PhD, specialist in psychosomatic medicine, specialist in psychiatry and psychotherapy, psychoanalysis. Training analyst of the German Psychoanalytic Association (DPV). Chair of the DPV 2010–2012; President of the International Psychoanalytic University Berlin 2012–2018; Head of the local training committee at the Alexander Mitscherlich Institute in Kassel. European representative on the Board and Executive Committee of the International Psychoanalytic Association.
