Participants will be encouraged to think reflectively about the development of the infant / young child. Participants will think about and reflect upon the experience of the infant / young child in relationship with a primary caregiver, how a secure attachment is achieved, and what can disrupt security.

Participants will be presented with classical concepts from Freud, Melanie Klein and Donald Winnicott. The research of Beatrice Beebe will be explored.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

1. Begin to describe the developmental lines leading to the Oedipal phase, using concepts of Freud, Melanie Klein and Donald Winnicott.
2. Demonstrate understanding of the importance and meaning of the infant’s /young child’s verbal communication, gaze and use of play, with reference to Beatrice Beebe.
3. Describe different attachment styles between infant and caregiver.
4. Be able to describe the experience of the power of the relationship between Infant / young child and caregiver(s).

Sandra Meyerovitz, MA (Social Work), Dipl. TCPP, FIPA; psychotherapist in private practice in Toronto. Her graduate training is in psychoanalytic child psychotherapy, and has experience of working with families, children, adolescents, and adults. Her work is varied, including, attachment issues; separation and loss; trauma and grief; and sexual abuse. She is interested in therapeutic interventions with young mothers and infants, and presently is a candidate with the advanced IPP (Infant parent Program, Toronto). She is the current Vice President of the Canadian Association of Psychoanalytic Child Therapists. Member TPS&I.

Ella Rogalska, DTATI, Dip. TCPP, RP, Cert. IMHS

Ella Rogalska, DTATI, Dip. TCPP, RP, Cert. IMHS is a Registered Psychotherapist in private practice in Toronto. Her graduate education is in psychoanalytic psychotherapy (infancy to adulthood). In the past ten years, Ella has worked and researched in infant mental health treatment and education. She was trained in the psychodynamic model of Infant Parent Psychotherapy (IPP) and is now an instructor and supervisor of the Infant-Parent Psychotherapy, Toronto based model. She is the current President of the Canadian Association of Psychoanalytic Child Therapists (CAPCT) and an Affiliate of the TPS&I.

A considerable part of her practice is dedicated to attachment-based treatment, supervision, and education. Ella has an advanced training in attachment studies. She trained to score the AAI with the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI) Institute taught by Howard Steele and Miriam Steele, members of the Consortium of AAI Trainers, and in Reflective Functioning (RF) by Howard Steele.
