This series will explore contemporary topics in Lacanian studies, especially in relation to the quote, “Everyone is mad,” in which Lacan was conveying the impossibility of teaching psychoanalysis. The comment has broadened in our socio-political world and therefore in our patients who come for help. It includes such ideas as: All knowledge has the status of delusion; that is, nothing is real or compelling and what could be the purpose in life. The symbolic is decreased in efficiency these days; that is, social discourse tends to be ruled by the imaginary (feelings, concrete thinking, polarized views, violence). Categories that were once accepted as obvious have been challenged by people who insist they are not mad (gender issues). There are no longer comprehensive, single big Others forming the base values in large language or social groups in society. Extremes of individualism and the tendency towards depathologization have promoted “acceptance” of everyone, but because this is impossible, segregation into smaller and smaller groups. We hope this will provide fruitful insights for discussions with the participants.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Itemize some changes in their own social and clinical world as they have experiences them over the last 5-10 years.
  2. Propose several theories as to why and how this has happened.
  3. Discover methods that people are using to cope with the disruptions these changes are causing.
  4. Describe the psychoanalytic dynamics as we find them being stimulated and emphasized in patients’ and in our own minds.
