COURSE SEVEN - Personality Development: Our Beginnings in Infancy

** DISTANCE PARTICIPATION ONLY – This course will be conducted online.

Participants will be encouraged to think reflectively about the development of the infant / young child. Participants will think about and reflect upon the experience of the infant / young child in relationship with a primary caregiver, how a secure attachment is achieved, and what can disrupt security.

Participants will be presented with classical concepts from Freud, Melanie Klein and Donald Winnicott. The research of Beatrice Beebe will be explored.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course, participants will be able:

  1. To begin to describe the preverbal development of the infant leading to the Oedipal phase, using the contribution of Freud, Melanie Klein and Donald Winnicott.
  2. To demonstrate understanding of the importance and meaning of the infant’s / young child’s non-verbal communication, gaze and use of play, with reference to Beatrice Beebe.
  3. To be able to describe the experience of the power of the relationship, infant / young child and caregiver(s); and to describe different attachment styles between infant and caregiver.
  4. To be able to describe the emergence of the verbal stage of development.
Sandra Meyerovitz, MA(Social Work), Dipl. TCPP, FIPA

Sandra Meyerovitz, MA (Social Work) RSW, Dip. TCPP, FIPA, is a registered Social Worker, Child/Adolescent and Adult Psychotherapist, Adult Psychoanalyst, and Infant Parent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist. Sandra graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa with a Masters degree in Social work; the Toronto Child Psychoanalytic Program (TCPP), now Canadian Institute of Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (CICAPP); and is a graduate of the Toronto Institute for Psychoanalysis. Sandra teaches in the Extension Programme of the Toronto Psychoanalytic Society and Adjunct Faculty for the education programmes at St. Louis Psychoanalytic Institute,(Missouri USA). Sandra trained in the Advanced program of IPP (Infant Parent Psychotherapy) and teaches in the programme. Sandra is a Clinical member of CAPCT (Canadian Association for Psychoanalytic Child Psychotherapists); it’s past Vice President and present member on the Board of Directors. Sandra is in private practice.

Ella Rogalska, DTATI, Dip. TCPP, RP, Cert. IMHS

Ella Rogalska, DTATI, Dip. TCPP, RP, Cert. IMHS is a Registered Psychotherapist in private practice in Toronto. Her graduate education is in psychoanalytic psychotherapy (infancy to adulthood). In the past ten years, Ella has worked and researched in infant mental health treatment and education. She was trained in the psychodynamic model of Infant Parent Psychotherapy (IPP) and is now an instructor and supervisor of the Infant-Parent Psychotherapy, Toronto based model. She is the current President of the Canadian Association of Psychoanalytic Child Therapists (CAPCT) and an Affiliate of the TPS&I.

A considerable part of her practice is dedicated to attachment-based treatment, supervision, and education. Ella has an advanced training in attachment studies. She trained to score the AAI with the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI) Institute taught by Howard Steele and Miriam Steele, members of the Consortium of AAI Trainers, and in Reflective Functioning (RF) by Howard Steele.

This event is eligible for Section 1 CME credits (0.5 credits/hour). This event is an accredited group learning activity (section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certificate Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, approved by the Canadian Psychiatric Association (CPA). The specific opinions and content of this event are not necessarily those of the CPA, and are the responsibility of the organizer(s) alone. As per the Royal College standard, each presentation provides a minimum of 25% interactive learning.

Full-time students in universities and colleges, and mental-health trainees are eligible for a 25% reduction in course fees. Proof of 2025/2026 status needs to be provided. Please contact the tps&i directly to register at a discount.

Refunds must be requested in writing two weeks prior to the beginning of a course. A handling fee of $30 will be retained. After these two weeks, fees cannot be returned.
