Personality Development: Our Beginnings in Infancy
This course will present aspects of the experiences and development of the infant and young child and how this knowledge may be useful in doing psychodynamic psychotherapy with adults, in particular in understanding the workings and uses of the counter-transference. It will present Freud’s classical concepts regarding infant sexuality, the early developmental phases and the developmental lines leading to the Oedipal phase. It will present a description of the different attachment styles between infant and caregiver, with reference to the work of Beatrice Beebe, and will show clips from certain films related to childhood experiences. Participants will be encouraged to think reflectively about the development of the infant and young child and about their experiences in relationship with a primary caregiver, how a secure attachment is achieved, and what can disrupt security.
At the end of the course the participants will be able to:
- To demonstrate understanding of the importance and meaning of the infant’s and young child’s verbal communication, gaze, and use of play.
- To be able to begin to describe the experience of the power of the relationship between the infant, young child, and caregiver(s).
- To be able to start describing self-reflective capacity that will inform their own clinical work.
Sandra Meyerovitz RSW, MA (Social Work), Dipl. TCPP
Psychotherapist in private practice in Toronto. Her graduate training is in psychoanalytic child psychotherapy, and has experience of working with families, children, adolescents, and adults. Her work is varied, including, attachment issues; separation and loss; trauma and grief; and sexual abuse. She is interested in therapeutic interventions with young mothers and infants, and presently is a candidate with the advanced IPP (Infant parent Program, Toronto). She is a candidate with the TIP (Toronto Institute for Psychoanalysis). She is the current Vice President of the Canadian Association of Psychoanalytic Child Therapists.
Lindsay Barton, MA, RP, CAPCT
Private Practice. Clinical Member Canadian Association of Psychoanalytic Child Therapists, Faculty CICAPP, University of Guelph-Humber (Early Childhood Studies); Graduate of TIP.
