Don Carveth’s new book, published by Routledge in April 2018, will be reviewed and discussed over the span of four evenings. Since the classical Freudian and Ego Psychology paradigms lost their position of dominance in the late 1950’s, psychoanalysis became a multi-paradigm science, with those working in the different frameworks increasingly engaging only with those in the same or related schools. Beginning with Freud’s theory of human nature and civilization, Carveth proceeds to review, critically evaluate and dialectically deconstruct a range of Post-Freudian contributions to psychoanalytic thought, with a view to breaking down the “silos”, and promoting mutual dialogue and critique.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of the course the participants will be able:

  1. To become familiar with many of the major Post-Freudian psychoanalytic perspectives.
  2. To understand dialectical thinking, and subject these perspectives to dialectical critique.
  3. To grasp psychoanalysis as an ethical practice governed by conscience as distinct from superego.
  4. To understand the connections between dialectical and evolutionary thought, and the Freudian, Kleinian, Eriksonian and Bionian vision of personal development as an evolution of the mind towards truth.

The Extension Courses are eligible for Section 1 CME credits (0.5 credits/hour).

Full-time students in universities and colleges, and mental-health trainees are eligible for a 25% reduction in course fees. Proof of 2018/2019 status needs to be provided. Please contact the tps&i directly to register at a discount. Refunds must be requested in writing two weeks prior to the beginning of a course. A handling fee of $30 will be retained. After these two weeks, fees cannot be returned.
