In this course we will be looking at the many ways that trauma presents itself in our clinical practices – from mild and cumulative to overwhelming. We will start by discussing the circumstances that traumatize infants and children. Then we will examine what factors and vulnerabilities produce trauma in the teen years. In adulthood overwhelming trauma can produce the paralyzing Zero Process in our psyche. We will also examine the traumatizing factors that affect the marginalized segment of our population, i.e. refugees, immigrants, homeless people. Another segment that experiences discrimination through social biases and prejudices are the many individuals who struggle with gender and sexual issues and can end up being traumatized.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of the course the participants will be able to:

  1. To understand what makes an individual vulnerable to feelings of trauma.
  2. To understand the different phases in our lives and the way that trauma impacts us in these phases of our life.
  3. To understand from the perspective of the marginalized person what can create trauma in their specific position in society.
